LAWASIA session: Electoral Democracy and the Rule of Law

Lawyers Across the Globe and Around the Clock for the Rule of Law

The first 24-hours Webathon in Defence of the Rule of Law launched by AIJA HRC (International Association of Young Lawyers - Human Rights Committee), UIA IROL (Union Internationale des Avocats - Institute for the Rule of Law), and ABA-SIL (American Bar Association – Section of International Law).

LAWASIA is excited to host a session: Electoral Democracy and the Rule of Law that will be live streamed on YouTube on Wednesday 5 May 2021, from 12:00 to 14:00 AEST.

Democratic elections are often cited as a key component of the Rule of Law. But elections in many parts of the world have faced enormous pressures – from efforts at voter suppression and harassment to claims of election fraud; from the influence of monetary contributions and social media to procedural challenges. In some jurisdictions, the results of elections have been disregarded altogether.

What role does the Rule of Law play in this inherently political sphere? Are democratic elections a necessary component of a fair and just legal system? And what is the role of the lawyer in protecting democratic elections without becoming subject to accusations of politicization?

Our panel will explore these questions in a variety of jurisdictions from Myanmar to the United States.
